The complainant married in July 2022, and after the marriage turned bitter she filed a dowry harassment case against her husband and in-laws, registered in 2024 at Subramanyapura Police Station under Sections 498A, 312, 504 and 506 IPC and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The husband's sister was accused No. 4. The main allegation against her was that she called and instigated the in-laws against the complainant, and that her phone conversations from abroad threatened the complainant with dire consequences. The sister said she married in 2017, has lived in Luxembourg ever since, long before the complainant's wedding, and that there was no specific allegation against her.

Justice M. Nagaprasanna held the allegations against her were vague and omnibus, and that alleged telephonic conversations from abroad did not make out the ingredients of cruelty under Section 498A. He allowed her petition and quashed the FIR and the proceedings pending before the Bengaluru ACMM as against her. The order concerns only the sister-in-law; the case against the other accused was not before the Court on this petition.
